In June, Kim Ley, 2012 MAR Leader, and his coworker Eduardo Pérez Catzim were invited to present the project “Integradora de Pescadores de Quintana Roo” at the International Economic Forum of the Americas. After seeing their presentation, the Deputy CEO of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), André Laperriere, recognized the project as “one of the best projects supported by the GEF in recent years.” We congratulate Kim and Eduardo for this recognition.

The Integradora de Pescadores de Quintana Roo works with communities in the Banco Chinchorro and Sian Ka’an biosphere reserves, and seeks to give added value to the lobsters these communities catch. Under the regulations of the CHAKAY collective brand and certification standards of the Marine Stewardship Council, the Integradora promotes sustainable fishing and at the same time helps fishers to get a better price for the lobster they sell.
